A Resource for Parents of Children With Special Needs

Parents of children with special needs are often told to write a “letter of intent” for their child’s future care givers or to create a binder with all the information someone would need to know. The prospect of this can be overwhelming, leaving people with little idea of where to start or what to include.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has created a workbook called “Directions: Resources for Your Child’s Care” which walks you through this process, step by step. This free guide helps you document all the information someone would need if they had to take over caring for your child including information about their medical history, schooling, and family life as well as how to prepare for an emergency and advocate for your child’s schooling.

The forms can be downloaded and updated as necessary, and even provides a place for your child to include information about themselves.

Once begun is half done, the saying goes, and downloading this guide will go a long way towards getting this planning done.
