As Your Family Changes, So Should Your Estate Plan

I have noticed that clients sometimes have difficulty making decisions on their estate plan because they can’t see the future. They get stuff on the “what if…”

“We could name our friends out of state as guardians now while our kids are babies, but what if when they are older they don’t want to move?” “I could name my father as executor but what if 20 years from now he isn’t able to serve in that role?”

Your estate plan, just like everything else in your life, can change and evolve as your life does. You wouldn’t put off buying a crib for your child just because when they are in high school it will be too small for them. You wouldn’t drive around without a car seat because your child will grow out of it some day. And you wouldn’t bring your child to a geriatrician just because some day they will be old.

You make the right decision for the facts at the time, just like you should with your estate plan. Then, when things change and babies grow, you make difference choices and plans to fit the situation.

Changes are part of life, and your wills, guardianship nominations and other legal documents can all change along with you.
