Baby Steps

A lot of people sound confessional when they first call or email me. “It’s been 3 years since my child was born and I haven’t done a will yet.” “It’s been 15 years since my last estate plan was done and I haven’t looked at it since then.” I always answer with the same thing – “That’s ok” and “you aren’t alone.” There are very few people who actually do all the things they are supposed to do at the time they are supposed to do them. Even your neighbors who seem to have it all together or that woman next to you in spin class.
But calling or emailing me is a huge first step. Just like stepping into spin class for the first time, or going to the doctor after a long absence or getting a dumpster so you can finally tackle the fright that is your garage. You have gotten yourself out of the paralysis of feeling like you’ve waited to long and now it’s too late and why bother. Everything after this point will be much easier.
That is sort of how I was feeling about writing here. A bunch of my clients died in April when I last wrote, which is a hazard of my occupation, but it made me sad and I didn’t feel like blogging. And then as the weeks went by I just kept not writing. But in the spirit of taking baby steps towards things that matter, here I am with a little blog post which will hopefully make the future ones easier. And even if they aren’t, I have at least written this one.
Take a baby step today towards something that matters. You’ll feel better. I promise.
